Scientific context
Origin, mechanism, and research
Bacteriostatic water for injection (USP) is not a peptide but a sterile, non-pyrogenic diluent: water for injection with 0.9% (9 mg/mL) benzyl alcohol as a preservative. It is the standard solvent in research settings for reconstituting lyophilized peptides, since benzyl alcohol inhibits microbial growth and allows multiple withdrawals from the same multi-dose vial under aseptic technique, unlike single-use plain sterile water. Relevant note: benzyl alcohol has historically been associated with toxicity in neonates and should not be used in that population. No biological mechanism of action applies here, since this is a formulation supply, not an active ingredient.
